14th...

Whelp the computer has selected me to pick 14th...  So plans change.  I save you my complaining and just get into the game plan.  Here is the range of players I will be looking at.  The nice thing about picking 14 is I can target 4-5 players because I will be picking almost back to back (pick 15 will pick twice in between me).  I will need to get a good feel for how he is constructing his team so he doesn't always steal players I am targeting with my 2nd wrap pick.  I should have a good feel for this after the 4th or 5th round.  So here is the range....

Prince Fielder (1B)
Stephen Strasburg (P)
Josh Hamilton (OF)
Justin Verlander (OF)
Buster Posey (C,1B)
Giancarlo Stanton (OF)
Clayton Kershaw (P)
Troy Tulowitzki (SS)
Hanley Ramirez (SS)
Ian Kinsler (2B)
Evan Longoria (3B)
Jose Bautista (OF)

My first thoughts are that picking 14 isn't as bad as I thought and I should be able to get 2 legit players in my first 2 rounds.  I can not miss on these because I don't pick again until pick #14 in the 3rd round (#37 overall).

Lets look at Fangraphs awesome ZIPs projections for the updated target players (batters and pitchers separated)

First off, lets talk about projections... They are exactly that projections.  They could be totally off.  However, these guys know a ton more than I do so at least I have something to go off from.  I use all kinds of websites to research but Fangraphs ZIPs is a really good place to start.  If I still can't make up my mind I go deeper and look at other sites/data.

Here is my batter ranks.. Who knows CarGo could slip to me a 14...

1. Prince Fielder (Legit top 5 proven first baseman)
2. Giancarlo Stanton (BEAST, if I can get him Ill post a picture of me giving you a thumbs up)
3. Buster Posey (If I get Fielder if I could get posey at 17 that would be a sick 1B-C combo)
4. Josh Hamilton (Yikes, I mean I don't really want him but he could go off in that new city and new line up worth the pick for massive upside)
5. Evan Longoria (Injury risk yes.  Huge upside = yes)

Oh crap I have to pick one of these..

1. Troy Tulowitzki
2. Ian Kinsler
3. Jose Bautista

I always sort by PA (Plate appearances) because I want players who are going to play.  So right off the bat look at the projected PA.  Tulo I love you because you are Tulo but those PAs worry me.. However the numbers he puts up in those PAs is impressive.  I just don't want to risk that much in Round 1.  Bautista's AVG turns me off and frankly I just don't think I want him.

Combination I would pick that I would not pick a pitcher with my 2nd round pick.
1. Fielder/Posey

Which means Ill probably pick a pitcher in round 2.  Now if I take a pitcher here I will take one in the next two rounds so I have 2 top tier pitchers then I can wait a couple more rounds before I look at starting pitching again and should have good start on everyone else in pitching.

Pitcher ranks.
Note: I have Verlander in another league so I would really like to take either Kershaw or Strasburg.

Strasburgs 11 win projection seems super low but it goes with the projected IP (Innings Pitched) and GS (Games Started).  So yeah that is all scary but if you watched him pitch last year you know if he pitched 200 innings (he is not on a inning limit this year) he could potentially have a Cy Young year.  Again, risk.. not something I am pumped about.  If I take a low risk player in RD1 then I could see myself going to Strasburg town (low risk players in RD1 - Fielder, Stanton).

Kershaw is a beast.  He pitches in the friendly NL west and at Dodger Stadium, PETCO and ATT alot which are three of the best pitcher parks in baseball.  He also will have to toss at Coors and Chase fields both launching pads but his stats there are pretty good going 4-4 with a sub 4 era.  But in the last 3 years at PETCO, ATT and Dodger Stadium he is a sparkling 36 - 14 with a sub 2 ERA wow.

Verlander is a beast monster but I don't want him in two leagues so looks like its between Strasburg and Kershaw.

Strasburg if I get a low risk player in RD1 and Kershaw if I select a medium to high risk player in RD1.

Alright well that is all for now.  Once the draft starts if things change Ill get on a modify my battle plan.
